A middle-aged couple came into FSA after they
had been shuffled from the Emergency Room to Catholic Charities
to Opportunities for Otsego then back to the hospital Social
Services Department only then to be referred to FSA for
assistance with the husband's 3 prescriptions.
Due to car troubles and repairs. they fell far behind on their
bills. They were trying to catch up by cutting out certain
expenses such as the telephone. The husband also had quit taking
his medications to save money.
He has diabetes and a serious problem with depression. His
medications were not to be stopped without notifying his doctor.
After several weeks of not taking his medications, he wound up
in the ER at a local hospital to be treated and released with 3
prescriptions. The couple did have Medicaid, but there was a
spend-down of $145. The total cost of his prescriptions is just
over that amount each month which meant they had to pay for
nearly all of his medication every month anyway.
After pricing the 3 prescriptions at local pharmacies to get the
best prices, FSA was able to assist the husband with getting his
necessary medications. They were also given information about
The Patient Assistance Program and the Medicine Program so that
they could apply directly to the manufacturer to receive future
refills at a reduced price or even free depending on their
income.
FSA also assisted the couple in contacting the phone company in
order to apply for Lifeline telephone services. As the husband
had medical issues they were eligible to apply for this program
and have their phone turned back on. |
